What’s love got to do with adherence?
Valentine’s Day reminds us of the importance of connection, but in serious illness, love often shows up in practical ways too. Medication-taking is rarely a solo act. Partners, adult children, and other caregivers may:
Coordinate appointments
Administer medication
Monitor symptoms
Fill pill boxes
Manage refills
Help interpret medical information
Research consistently shows that caregiver involvement improves adherence, reduces patient stress, and supports self-management. But caregiver influence isn’t always straightforward. Loved ones bring their own fears, beliefs, and tolerance for side effects. Sometimes decisions about a treatment reflect the caregiver’s psychology as much as the patient’s.
Thinking about adherence as a relational system and not just an individual act, matters for pharma teams too. Programs, messaging, and support interventions that consider both the patient and their caregivers are more likely to drive engagement, adherence, and real-world outcomes. Ignoring that system often means missing half the picture.
